Dark Sky

The Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve offers visitors the rare opportunity to experience truly dark night skies, where the Milky Way and Southern Hemisphere constellations can be seen with the naked eye. Designated in 2023 as an International Dark Sky Reserve, it spans much of the Wairarapa Valley and reflects a strong regional commitment to protecting the night.

This protected sky forms the natural setting for experiences at Stonehenge Aotearoa, where visitors can connect with the stars through guided interpretation and storytelling. Together, the Reserve and Stonehenge Aotearoa help preserve the darkness that allows people to experience the night sky as it has been observed for  generations
