The Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve is an internationally recognised region protecting one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s darkest night skies. Designated in 2023, the Reserve covers 3,665 square kilometres across the Wairarapa Valley and is home to around 21,000 residents.
This recognition reflects both the quality of the night sky and a shared commitment to managing artificial light so stars, planets, and the Milky Way remain visible for generations to come.
A Shared Commitment
The Reserve was established through collaboration between the Wairarapa Dark Sky Association, local and regional councils, the Māori Standing Committee, residents, and businesses.
Protecting the night sky is a collective effort. From planning decisions to everyday lighting choices, communities across Wairarapa play a role in keeping the night naturally dark.
Core and Periphery
The Reserve is made up of two key areas:
Core Area
Located entirely within Aorangi Forest Park, the core consists of public conservation land managed by the Department of Conservation. All lighting here is fully compliant with dark-sky standards.
Periphery
Surrounding districts, including South Wairarapa and Carterton, manage outdoor lighting through District Plans. More than 50 percent of street lighting is already compliant, with upgrades ongoing.
Together, these areas work as one system to protect the night sky.
